Online math courses are a primary source for students of all ages to discover that they CAN learn mathOnline Math Courses

Online math courses have become a primary source for students of all ages to discover that they CAN learn math (or maths, as it is in the UK and Australia), and what's more, enjoy themselves when they're doing it!

While traditional mathematics education classes rely on textbooks with static numbers on a page, most online math courses use the latest computer graphic techniques, including animation, which allow you to visualize and grasp math concepts more effectively. Younger students, brought up on computer games and already using computers at school, like this innovative approach - it makes math come alive for them - and older students are usually pleasantly surprised by the radical change from the time when they tried to learn math by conventional methods.

Who should take online math courses?

The answer is, anyone who needs math in their daily life (don't we all?) but who is struggling to learn effectively and could do with a helping hand. Distance learning math education can benefit:

There are quite a few websites which offer math programs to suit the needs of K-12 schools, home schools, colleges, universities, and adults needing math in their daily lives.

Advantages of online math courses

As with other correspondence or distance learning courses, online math courses are self paced and allow you to learn at your own rate and comfort level. You'll find that the schools go to great lengths to ensure the lessons are clearly written and easy to follow. In addition, the above-mentioned graphic and animation techniques - and other features like flash cards, scored tests, printable worksheets and the like - are a great help in keeping students interested when they're learning, and let's face it, taught the wrong way math can be rather a dry subject! What's more, these courses may not be free, but they're considerably cheaper and in many cases more effective than private tutoring.

What kind of math subjects are covered, and in what stages?

If it's been a long time since you were in school, you probably want to start out at the basic math/pre algebra level. It is important you start at the right level, because if you don't understand the basics, math just becomes frustrating and you'll end up not completing the course.

As far as exams go, basic math/pre algebra courses are usually aimed at students studying for the GED (US) or equivalent. Note that in the US, you can study for the test online, but you have to take the actual test at your local adult education centre.

Once you get through that, you should take elementary and intermediate algebra, especially if you're aiming at the CBEST (US) tests, which cover basic math, elementary algebra, geometry and data interpretation. And if you're taking a test such as the US GRE or ELM, you'll also have to take a course covering intermediate algebra, and more on data Interpretation and geometry.

High school students can get extra help with math online

If you're a high school student and you blew math, you can get a second chance to master basic math with an online review course. Lots of schools offer these courses online, and parents (and studying adults) should note that these have distinct advantages that can make the extra study a pleasure rather than a chore:

If your child develops strong study skills - and gets lots of practice, something online math courses can provide - this will be a huge help during his or her academic progress from second grade through sixth grade and above.
